MIGA : crumb
(The soft center of bread)
figuratively : substance, essence, basis, core
informally : the nitty - gritty
The miga sandwich is at the epicenter of quotidian Argentine cuisine.
Take two pieces of un-toasted white bread, cut off the crust and put ham & cheese in the middle. You can layer it if you like.
The traditional version and the many variants on the theme constitute a good portion of the offerings of the majority of local delis, bakeries, bars and restaurants.
Variants include the ham & cheese & tomato miga sandwich, the tuna miga sandwich, the cheese & tomato miga sandwich, and the toasted ham & cheese miga sandwich. There are more.
As you thus see, miga is synonymous with daily survival in this great land and I shall record my attempts (some failed) at such.
When necessary, I repeat to myself a polish proverb (I am part polish after all) which refers to other people's nonsense:
Not my circus, not my monkeys.
